How to Get to FEV

Getting to FEV from Managua or Matagalpa in personal vehicle
From Managua, take the Pan-American Highway (C-1) North ‘La Carretera Norte’ until you
reach the city of Sebaco, from where you will continue driving straight (Northeast) following the
signs to the city of Matagalpa. The entire journey is 160 Km. and will take roughly 2.5 hours.
Pass through Matagalpa, slowing down for the occasional speed bump and continue straight.
You will eventually pass an Esso gas station (San Martin) on your left just before intersection
that leads to Selva Negra and Jinotega. Curve right at this intersection, following the signs
to Matagalpa. Continue straight under the stop-light and over the bridge, exiting Matagalpa
proper and follow the road (beware of potholes) to the Intersection of San Francisco (Empalme
de San Francisco). Turn right at this intersection following the signs to San Ramón. There will
a police check-point to your left and a restaurant to your right (La Pradera de San Francisco)
followed by a Finca Esperanza Verde sign (green) indicating the right turn.
As you enter San Ramón you will see a statue (San Ramón Nonano), a bus stop and a shell
station located just behind. Veer to the left before this statue. After one block, the road
will split. Take a left before the library and continue up the hill following the signs to Finca
Esperanza Verde. You are now driving on La Carretera El Jobo. You will pass through the
communities of La Reyna and El Naranjo, before arriving to the community of Yúcul. You will
have driven 15 km. from the entrance of San Ramón.
As you make the bend through Yúcul, there will be a small gravel road to your left directly
behind a small community store set upon a hill. The farm is 3.5 km. from the start of this road.
After 3 km mostly uphill, you will approach a small reservoir (Prensa de Bavaria). Continue
straight (don’t follow the road right) through the community of La Chispa, down the hill, past
the Mariposario on your left and continue straight until you reach the main lodge.

Getting to FEV from Managua or Matagalpa by public transportation
The easiest way to get to Matagalpa from the Sandino International Airport in Managua
is to wave down one of the public buses that pass directly in front of the airport with final
destination to Matagalpa. Express buses are recommended as they are faster, but they may
pass less frequently (35-45 minutes). The charge is around 60 Cordobas.
160 kilometers and roughly 3 hours later, the bus will stop at Cotran Sur bus terminal in
Matagalpa. From here, you will have to take a taxi to Cotran Norte in order to catch a bus to
either the town of San Ramón or the community of Yúcul. Taxi’s will charge anywhere from 10-
30 cordobas. You can also decide to take a private taxi from Cotran Sur directly to FEV which
will cost around $35.00 – $40.00
Once at Cotran Norte, you will need to take one of the following buses El Jobo, La Patriota, or Cerro Colorado. These pass through San Ramón on their way to more remote communities including Yúcul (3.5 km from FEV). From Cotran Norte to San Ramon, the charge is 10 cordobas, while to Yúcul, the charge is 20 cordobas. There are also collective taxis that pass through the Juanuca Market (outside Cotran Norte) on their way to San Ramón. They charge 10 cordobas per person, but will wait until the car is full. Once in San Ramón, you can always decide to take a private taxi to FEV for $25.00 – $30.00 or catch any of the above buses to Yúcul at a later time from the bus stop near the Catholic Church.
The walk from Yúcul is more of a hike and is not recommended if traveling with more than a
backpack. Adventurers will be rewarded, however, as it winds upward through coffee fields and
plantations offering spectacular views and a glimpse into the lives of rural Nicaraguans.
